Forside/Winter by the Wadden Sea

January – March · Winter in West Jutland

Winter by the Wadden Sea

Peaceful winter walks in Arnbjerg Park, a warm dinner at Restaurant GRO and long evenings by the fireside.

Winter in West Jutland has a tranquillity all of its own. When the trees in Arnbjerg Park stand bare against the grey sky, and the Wadden Sea lies still beneath a low winter sun, it is the perfect time to switch off and find some peace and quiet. Our winter break is designed with precisely that in mind — tranquillity, warm food and cosy rooms, with no pressure to do anything in particular.

Winter breaks in West Jutland

Many people regard winter as the off-season in West Jutland, but we think it’s the most beautiful time of year. The light is special — low and soft — and the park is beautiful in all weathers. At Arnbjerg Pavillonen, we have winter offers that make it an attractive time to visit in January, February and March: discounted room rates, free access to our car park, and a warm welcome from the whole team.

Migratory birds at the Wadden Sea

Winter is bird migration season in the Wadden Sea — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Millions of birds stop off along the coast, and from the birdwatching towers at Mandø Ebbevej and Skallingen, you can witness the ‘Black Sun’ phenomenon, where thousands of starlings dance across the sky. We have visitors from all over Europe who come specifically to see this.

Nearby indoor museums

Winter is the perfect time for museum visits. Within a 30-minute drive: Tirpitz (the bunker museum designed by Bjarke Ingels), FLUGT Refugee Museum, the Otto Frello Museum in Varde, the Wadden Sea Centre in Vester Vedsted, Esbjerg Museum and the Ribe Viking Centre. We offer museum breaks with admission included.

Winter at Restaurant GRO

The winter menu at Restaurant GRO is hearty, slow-cooked and warming. Casper creates dishes that reflect the season: beef shank braised in red wine, game from local hunters, root vegetables from Varde, complemented by full-bodied Danish red wines from our cellar. The sort of food that makes you want to stay for another evening.
